Medieval Villages – No.3

Looking at photos of medieval villages brings to mind many songs. The theme of No.1 was ‘Early Spring’, No.2 was ‘Early Summer’. And this No.3 is ”Mid Summer.”

This No.3 suite comprises four pieces titled ‘Morning’, ‘Noon’, ‘Evening’ and ‘Bells’.

Tokyo wasn’t this hot 10 years ago, but perhaps due to global warming, it has become so hot that summer is no longer enjoyable. However I made this No.3 while I’m looking at the refreshing summer photos, so the pieces make me feel a bit cooler.

Last year, I once completed this suite by writing three pieces: ‘Morning’, ‘Evening’, and ‘Bells’, but for this release, I decided to create ‘Noon’. At first, I wasn’t conscious of the changes throughout the day, but when I write the titles of each piece into the score, I thought it would be better to include ’Noon’ as well. As a result, I was pleased with the increased variety of pieces. The great thing about suites is that they allow for this kind of compositional freedom.

In this suite, ‘Evening’ and ‘Bells’ are in reverse order in terms of time. However I thought it would be better musically to put ‘Bells’ last, so I decided not to be too concerned about the time.

This autumn, I will make a suite about autumn village as No.4. It may be released next year.
