The title photo was taken at ‘Kiun-kaku’ in Atami – a popular hot spring resort in Japan. It is a villa of a conglomerate built in the early 20th century, and it’s now on display as a cultural asset. The architectures of this period partially incorporates Western style into traditional Japanese style, and have a unique exotic feeling.

Originally, Japanese architectures did not have the windows like this. In traditional Japanese construction methods, where the structure is completed with posts and beams, walls are not an essential part of the structure. The Japanese architectural philosophy was to have no walls on the south side, so that the outside and inside would not be separated. — Please see my photo to know it. — At that time, looking out through a small window decorated with colored glass and curtains must have been quite a new sensation.


In this piece, I tried to synthesize Japanese sensibilities and Western scales, like as in the architecture of that time. I also tried to express the tension of contrasts between outside and inside of window. I’m satisfied that I could express what I wanted.
